One-thousand-and-ninety-nine out of 1200 in Plus Two may not appear to be a great score.
It may not shine in comparison with the district toppers or State toppers. But the sheen the mark has will be revealed only if looked at in the light from a hurricane lamp under a leaky thatched roof. For, that is where R. Suganya earned hers.
The topper of the Government Hr. Sec. School in Olagadam, near Anthiyur, spent her entire Plus Two study hours under the lamp to score 188 in Tamil, 171 in English, 195 in Physics, 174 in Chemistry, 185 in Biology and 186 in Maths.
The Struggle she had
It was difficult because I had to fight for space with my three younger sisters and also a leaky roof during rains, says the daughter of casual labourer P. Ravichandran.
Sometimes my sisters studying aloud affected my concentration and I had to chide them.
On other occasions there was no space to write record notebooks, because all shared a lamp.
There were also other problems that the girl had to face.
On many occasions I went school without food because fathers job was irregular. Her mother working as a casual labourer also did not help the family.
Undeterred, she marched on to earn the 1099 she did.
Uncertain future
Ms. Suganya does not know if she will be able to continue her march.
“I have applied for counselling and am hopeful of getting either a medical or an engineering seat but not so hopeful of taking it up, for I do not have the means to pay fees”, says the girl.
She is looking for help to bear her educational expenses.
Her school head master T. Ravichandran says the girl stood school first in S.S.L.C. examinations as well and has a good conduct.
We expect your helping hands for this young bud to build future India.
